Well, we had quite a good weekend. While all the humans went to Llandudno, we owls had a bit of a party, A couple of local Tawnies came to visit and told us about the way they are finding that moving into town does have some benefits. It seems that they find the hunting quite good though they eat more mice than the voles they used to catch in the countryside. Also, they can have a quick snack of insects by sitting close to street lamps and catching the moths and things that are attracted to the light. Seems like quite a good life though I’m not sure about all the noise.
On Sunday, Ian gave me all the gossip about my friends at the farm. Charlie and Brook are enjoying themselves and I am pleased to hear that Huw the Long-Eared Owl is back. He’s been living with Eve for a while just over the other side of the hill. Now he’s with us at the farm again, Delyth, the Barn Owl, has gone to spend some time with Eve who will try to calm her down and make her less scared.
Mac is doing well – he seems to have sorted out a few jobs for himself. He is working in the courtyard café cleaning tables.
He tells me that he’s made friends with a wren who is living in a woodpile at the back of the barn. I think this wren is called Jimmy and he knows some really good places to get warm when the wind blows. Wrens are very good at finding little holes to hide in and people hardly ever notice them. They do have very loud voices for such little birds and sing nicely. “Not as well as robins though,” says Mac.
I am going to St. Matthews Brownies today! (They are little girls – not a sort of fairy.) I am going to be helping them to get their Wildlife badges. This is a very important job for me so I’ll be letting you know how they get on. We help other Brownie groups to get badges and go into schools to help children to learn about the environment. (Perhaps I ought to get a Teachers Badge).
Got to go now and prepare my lesson for the Brownies!
Lots of hoots
Otis
