Hello there Everyone!
Well it’s wild weather at the moment, isn’t it? I am staying tucked up in my box most of the time to keep out of the wind and rain. Pat and Rebecca have been taking me for walks around the place so I have seen some of my friends. This is my friend Douglas. He was telling me he likes wild weather!
But then he is a bit of a wild one himself! he was saying that a lot of the wild birds have been sheltering in the trees behind the aviaries but some of them such as the herring gulls and ravens are a bit like him and enjoy the wind.
Jenni took me to see a funny looking thing she said was a baby pigeon! She says he is called Percy.
I wanted to know what he was doing here and she said he was a victim of all the wild weather we have been having. He was blown out of his nest and some people found him on the ground all cold and wet. They found out about the NWBT and brought him along to see if we could help him. Of course, Bill and Jenni said, “Yes” and so here we are! Jenni says he is quite difficult to feed because baby pigeons will only open their beaks for food if one of their parents covers the baby’s beak with their own bigger one. Jenni says she doesn’t have a beak so trying to be a foster Mum to a pigeon is a bit tricky. Owl babies are much easier for humans to look after as they open their beaks if you just touch them – but then owls are by far the most sensible birds.
I went to have a chat with Freddie the other day.
He told me he really likes the aviary they have given him and Griff. There are lots of nice places to sit and he has a good view of the sea. He said that Mac the Robin was right about the curlews coming back for winter as he has seen about 50 in the fields near the sea in the mornings.
Well, that’s all except to say that the Evening Hoot is really starting up again now that it is getting dark sooner and everyone is settling into their winter territories. I think I should have some news for you soon.
Lots of hoots,
Otis
