Hello everyone,

In my last blog, I talked to you about making homes for small creatures and insects so I thought today I would get you to think about ways of helping birds. Of course you probably all put out food for the birds in your gardens such as seed, fat and mealworms but don’t forget you can also put out fruit such as currants, your apple cores and any fruits that may have gone a little too soft or over-ripe in your fruit bowl.

However, there are lots more you can do! Your habitat piles will provide good places for Dunnocks, Robins and Wrens to scratch around for insects – if it is big enough, Robins and Wrens may even find a place there to build a nest.

You can help birds find a place to bring up their children by putting up nest boxes. You can make your own or buy some from places like the RSPB and many garden centres. Find out more here – http://www.rspb.org.uk/news/305609-nest-is-best-in-wales

This is about the last chance you have this year to get up nestboxes soon enough for birds to use them. It is really better to put them up in the Autumn so that birds can get used to them over the Winter. Some birds will use them as shelters in the cold weather.

There are lots of different kinds of boxes you can buy or make. Take a look at this selection from Haith’s.

Don’t forget to go on feeding the birds all year round. It does help them to bring up strong and healthy babies if they can find lots of good food.

That’s all for now!

See you again soon,

Otis.
